The Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Hospital was opened on May 5, 1956. In accordance with its Founder' thought, Saint Pio from Pietrelcina, the mission of the Foundation consists in didactics, medical training and scientific research as well as the care and the assistance of those who suffer. On 1991 the Hospital had been recognized IRCCS, i.e. Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care, in the field of genetic and hereditary diseases by the Italian Ministry of Health. It currently has 1.081 beds, employees almost 1700 people, services 46.000 ordinary admissions and 9.400 surgeries per year included in 9 clinical departments and 34 Clinical Units.Further details are included on our website.
